Three Ways to Stop Failure Before It Stops You!

Here's a staggering statistic: almost 500,000 people will step into a leadership role in the next year - and over half of them will fail.

Recently, I read in FORTUNE magazine that if a new leader is hired from outside, there is a 40% chance they will be ousted within 18 months. The cost of that failure is ten times the leader's base salary, and that only includes the measurable costs. According to Brad Smith's survey of 54 companies with failed leadership, when both direct and indirect costs are included, the cost soars to 28 times the base salary.

It's a wasteful, unnecessary cost that hurts productivity as well as morale. The good news is it's preventable. Here are three key ways you can stop these disastrous results before they even begin to affect you as leader.

  • Be coachable. Develop the ability to accept and implement feedback from bosses, colleagues, customers, and others. Hire a competent, certified coach to evaluate your skills and coach you on ways to leverage your strengths. Partner with people whose strengths complement your weaknesses. For example, if you're not a detail person but you're great at the big picture, collaborate closely with someone who loves the detail work. You'll be happier and more effective, and so will they.
  • Hone your emotional intelligence (EQ). Gain the ability to understand and manage your own emotions and accurately assess the emotions of others. Leadership IQ, a global leadership training and research company conducted research with 312 business and healthcare organizations. Of the over 5200 managers surveyed, coachability and emotional intelligence alone accounted for over 49% of the solution to leadership problems. I coach my clients to get EQ training and have their teams trained, too.
  • Build key relationships. Stybel Peabody Lincolnshire, a senior-level outplacement services company, discovered that when relationships are weak, a leader begins to fail within 15 days of taking their new role. One case study outlined a company where the senior team sat less than 20 feet from the employees and yet rarely did they come out of their offices and interact with their teams. It's not surprising that the company is failing fast, despite two new senior VPs in the last year. Step out of your office once in a while and connect with your team.

You may think you have the skills to be leader, but technical competence accounts for a mere 11%. What was once touted as "soft skills" is now being recognized as "critical skills" for successful leadership. You can pay 28 times an executive's salary or hire a coach, assess your EQ, and get to know the people who work for you. The cost savings is up to you.
